    Collapse overview
As a formally trained Medical Oncologist with many years of experience in the evaluation and therapy of patients with HIV, HCV and malignant disorders, I have a commitment to accelerate the delivery of research advances to improve patient care in these catastrophic diseases. I believe that fostering and initiating translational research, participation in physician education and research mentoring is likely the best way I can do this. During my professional career I have been active in the education and mentoring of young students, internal medicine residents and researchers. I am actively involved with basic research on hematological conditions and the various immunodeficiency viruses. I am involved with clinical research in cancer and HIV infection and I have acquired the administrative and people skills necessary to manage research programs from a multidisciplinary point of view. My tenure as Chairman and Program Director of the Internal Medicine of our School of Medicine for 13 years, my role as Principal investigator of the Retrovirus Research Center for 18 years and co-Principal Investigator of the Puerto Rico Comprehensive Center for the Study of HIV Disparities (PR-CCHD), have given me the skills and knowledge to manage the complexities and details of multidisciplinary research programs and help to direct research initiatives. In 2007, I completed a master’s degree in Bioethics and I am one of the few clinicians and researchers in the Island to have formal advanced training in Bioethics. This training has been effectively used to mentor researchers in the area of the ethical conduct of research, as overseer of various DSMB programs and by providing our patients with the highest degree of protection from abuse.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
