  Dr. Karen G. Martínez received her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico in 2001 and completed her residency and fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the same institution in 2006. She is also completed a Post-doctoral Master’s in Clinical Research. During her two years as a post-doctoral research scholar, she completed her research work on the role of maternal depression in pediatric asthma under the mentorship of Dr. Glorisa Canino. This work was published in the Journal of Asthma in 2008. On 2009, she was given additional funding for research and moved her line of research into the area of fear learning and anxiety disorder under the mentorship of Dr. Gregory Quirk. Her work at this time consists of trying to understand the role of extinction in anxiety disorders. Specifically, she is looking for predictors of response to therapies that rely on extinction processes and the particularities of anxiety treatment in Puerto Ricans. She has published three papers on this line of work and has presented it on multiple local, national and international conferences. With this work, she was accepted in the NIH Loan Repayment Program and she was also awarded the Anxiety Disorders of America Career Development Award and the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology Minority Faculty Award. She was also the Director of the Research Program at the University Of Puerto Rico Department Of Psychiatry until July, 2011. She is currently the director of the University of Puerto Rico Center for the Study and Treatment of Fear and Anxiety where she performs her research projects as well as directs an evidence-based clinic for anxiety disorders.
