overview I am a social scientist interested in the individual, interpersonal, and structural level implications of social exclusion in health from an interdisciplinary perspective. During my academic career, I have addressed this via two main research tracks: 1) health disparities and 2) music, culture and community health. Firstly, my health disparities research aims to understand and address how the intersectionality of stigmatized diseases (i.e., serious mental illness, HIV/AIDS, endometriosis) and marginalized identities (i.e., Latinxs, transgender men, and women, older adults) impact the process of health and disease. Secondly, my music, culture, and community health research has focused on understanding how marginalized cultural practices such as music foster community health and social justice, specifically in Latin America and the Caribbean. These interests have been manifested via research, teaching, and service. Other interests include 1) implementation science, 2) application of epistemologies of the south in research, and 3) multi-method approaches.
