Dr. José R. Carlo-Izquierdo served as Chancellor of the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus from 2001 to 2009. He is a graduate of the UPR-School of Medicine (1978), completing his Residency in Neurology at Louisiana State University and a Fellowship in Neuromuscular Diseases at the University of Southern California. Dr. Carlo is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic and Neuromuscular Laboratory of the UPR-School of Medicine. Prior to his appointment as Chancellor, he served as Associate Director of the RCMI Clinical Research Center of the Medical Sciences Campus. Dr. Carlo has received several recognitions, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association Fellowship and Merritt Award, the “Center Development Award” of the Industry and Academia Consortium, and the “Partnership Award” of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He served as Board Member of various institutions, including the Puerto Rico Cardiovascular Center, University Hospital, the Puerto Rico Medical Center, and the Diabetes Center of Puerto Rico (President). Dr. Carlo is also a member of several international organizations, including the Cooperative
International Neuromuscular Research Group (CINRG) and the Neuropathy Association.
