    Dr. Pedro Santiago obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and his Ph. D. in Developmental Neurobiology, both from the University of Puerto Rico. After completing his Ph. D., he obtained postdoctoral training in molecular cancer biology, first at the Pathology Department at Harvard Medical School, and then at the Molecular Oncology Research Institute in the Tufts Medical Center. His postdoctoral training focused on cell cycle control and the molecular aspects of the tumor suppressive functions of the retinoblastoma protein (pRb). He is a trained molecular cancer biologist, with expertise in cell cycle control and signal transduction pathways, and is currently one of the few researchers on the pRb field in Puerto Rico. He currently is an Associate Professor at the Basic Sciences Department, BiochemistryDivision at Ponce Health Science University, where he is actively involved in both teaching and research. Research in his laboratory is focused on the characterization of a novel role for pRb, which is traditionally known as a cell cycle repressor, as a regulator of cellular adhesion. Specifically, his research is focused on the characterization of the molecular mechanisms and cellular pathways by which pRb regulates cellular adhesion and blocks cancer metastasis. He also investigates the genetics and molecular biology of lung cancer in Puerto Ricans.
