William F. Haning, III, M.D., FASAM, DFAPA
(“Bill”)
Dr. William Haning is a tenured Professor of Psychiatry at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai’i, who serves as the Director, Psychiatry Residency Training Programs and as the Associate Chair for Education of the Department of Psychiatry. He a chair of the medical student neuroscience curriculum for that school. He also co-directs training programs in Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry, and is Principal Investigator for the Pacific Addiction Research Center (PARC®). Nationally, he is a Director of the American Society of Addiction Medicine; and the designated Chair of the Examination Committee for Addiction Psychiatry, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He holds an A.B. (Philosophy) from Princeton University and an M.D. from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Haning is certified in Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine; has received teaching awards inclusive of the APA’s Nancy C.A. Roeske Certificate, the John M. Hardman mentorship award from the John A. Burns School of Medicine of the University of Hawai`i, and the University of Hawai`i Regents Medal; and has chaired a number of community service boards including the Life Foundation and the Hawai’i Program for Healthcare Professionals. The past Force Surgeon for U.S. Marine Forces Pacific, and for Marine Forces Central Command in Operation Iraqi Freedom, he served also as the Division Psychiatrist, 4th Marine Division. A Captain in the Navy Reserve, he transferred to the Retired Reserve in 2009 and continues to serve as the Professional Services Liaison Officer for Hawai`i; his awards include the Legion of Merit.
He spends a lot of time trying to defeat age through exercise, which seems only to wear him out; and an equal amount of time trying to understand humanity by reading history, which only raises more questions. He lives in Manoa Valley in Honolulu where he is the undeserving spouse of the remarkable Dr. Libby Char, Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery in Emergency Medicine.
