Dr. Chang is a Professor of Tropical Medicine and Chair of the Tropical Medicine Graduate Program. She joined the department in 1986 as a researcher in the malaria vaccine development program and currently is principal investigator on research projects on malaria immunology and vaccine development and metabolomic analysis of P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes. Her areas of interest in malaria vaccine development include mechanisms of immunity to P. falciparum blood stages, development of adjuvants for blood stage malaria vaccines, and requirements for effective germinal center formation and memory B cell development for malaria vaccines. Malaria metabolomics projects include the application of mass spectrometry to the discovery of new metabolic pathways that may be exploited for malaria drug development. Dr. Chang teaches graduate courses in infectious disease immunology and immunopathogenesis and lectures on topics related to immunology and vaccination for graduate and medical students.
In addition to her academic role, Dr. Chang serves as a liaison for the RTRN Research Coordinating Center. She assists in the co-ordination of the HIV/AIDS, Infectious and Immunological Diseases, and Neurological and Mental Health Disease Research Clusters and the Mentoring and Professional Development Key Function Leaders Group.
