overview As a physician and an epidemiologist by training, I have a broad background and experience in the study of rheumatically conditions, including systemic Lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, and in the study of HIV/AIDS disease and its related conditions, including hepatitis C infection, cancer, renal disease, and diabetes beside others. I have been an active investigator and a Co-Principal Investigator in the Retrovirus Research Center (RRC) of the Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC) RCMI Program. In addition I am the Co-Principal Investigator of the HIV and Substance Abuse Laboratory Core (HSALC) of the UCC RCMI Program at Bayamon, Puerto Rico. I have been directly implicated with its collaborative research process of the RRC in Puerto Rico, the US and internationally. I have been involved in mentoring junior investigators, including faculty members and internal medicine students. I have been successfully involved in studies generation-implementation, data collection, data management, results dissemination, and study collaborations. I was the principal investigator of one of the pilot project included in the Puerto Rico Comprehensive Center for the study of HIV Disparities (PR-CCHD), grant by the NIH. This project created, implemented and evaluated an educational and counseling intervention directed to reduce hepatitis C virus risk behaviors and co-infection in HIV- infected injecting drug users. I have been involved in the design, creation, and implementation of the course “Health Disparities: A research Approach” that is a collaboration effort of educational institutes in Puerto Rico and US, and the RTRN. I am a member of the Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Neurological Disorders-Mental health, and the Infectious and Immunological Diseases RTRN's clusters. In addition, I am a junior member and part of the steering committee of North American– AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design (NA-ACCORD) of the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA), since 2010. As a result of my research career I have several peer reviewed publications as first author and co-author in national and international journals.
