I have been working in sickle cell disease for many years as a researcher, mentor, instructor and clinical laboratory scientist, directing the State of Tennessee Hemoglobinopathy Confirmatory and Reference Laboratory for the Newborn Screening Program. I am also a tenured professor in the Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology, and have trained in my research laboratory, seventy individuals at different educational levels, from HS students to undergraduate, medical, graduate, postdoctoral and medical residents in sickle cell research. I have worked in prenatal diagnosis of Hemoglobinopathies, development of transgenic animal
models for sickle cell disease, and the effect of hydroxyurea therapy in reproduction in sickle cell disease. I have a vast, diverse and unique experience in sickle cell disease that covers a wide array of knowledge, from basic, clinical and translational science to diagnostic services, cultural competency and health disparities.
