overview The goal of the proposed research is to investigate the role of tafazzin knockout on the mitochondrial function. Specifically, we plan to measure changes in mirochondrial repiratory supercomplexes from knockout and wild type mice. I have the expertise, leadership and motivation necessary to successfully carry out the proposed work. I have been developed a broad and detailed background in gene manipulation and biochemical analysis, with specific training and expertise in key research areas for this application. As a postdoctoral fellow at National Institute of Health, I analyzed the role of JNK on mitochondrial dysfunction using mouse model of oxidative stress. I carried out biochemical analysis as well as animal studies. At the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), I expanded my research to include the changes in phosphoproteome with mitochondrial dysfunction from oxidative stress. After finishing the study, I moved to University of Puerto Rico to continue my research on mitochondrial dysfunction on heart failure. As a molecular biologist and biochemist, I have been researching mitochondrial biology especially in the oxidative stress mediated dysfunction. In addition, I successfully carried out the projects collaborated with other researchers, and produced several peer-reviewed publications from each project. As a result of these previous experiences, I am aware of the importance of collaborative network and communication among scientists. During 2000-2004 my career was paused due to national obligations – mandatory military service as a South Korean citizen. However, I was partly lucky because my job was instructor/teacher/education coordinator. When I was discharged I immediately resumed my research and successfully competed for the support from National Research Foundation of Korea. In summary, I have a demonstrated record of accomplished and productive research projects in an area of high relevance, and my expertise and experience.
