    Collapse overview
The research that we are conducting is related to three main areas. The first area is the understanding of biochemical/pharmacology processes of antiretroviral and anticancer drugs in the Puerto Rican population. These studies include the plasmatic and intracellular pharmacokinetics of such agents in the pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations. Furthermore, we are interested in the enzymatic pathways that are responsible for the activation of these drugs. The second area is related with biomarkers of disease using endogenous antioxidant agents and related compounds. Glutathione is being studied as a marker for disease progression in HIV patients. In addition, we are studying homocysteine levels in patients with cardiac problems, to understand the role of this compound and its enzymes at different stages of the disease. Molecular biology will be used to probe the genetic differences of important enzymes responsible for the production and excretion of these compounds. The third area is within the Center for Environmental Research and Toxicology, where a multidisciplinary approach is used to answer relevant environmental problems that are affecting the Puerto Rican population.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
