Seedless nonflowering plants of the class Filicinae. They reproduce by spores that appear as dots on the underside of feathery fronds. In more recent classifications, pteridophytes and spermatophytes (seed-bearing plants) are classified in the Subkingdom TRACHEOPHYTA (also known as Tracheophyta).
